Naoki Yoshida revealed the information in anticipation of the release of the Endwalker expansion
During the preview event for the launch of Endwalker, expansão do MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV, Naoki Yoshida, director behind the success of the Square Enix game, revealed that multiplayer has become the franchise’s most profitable Final Fantasy. In addition, the director also confirmed that the game has surpassed the 24 million player mark, after the release of the latest game expansion.
Yoshida did not release figures related to profits made by Final Fantasy XIV, but revealed how the player count has risen over the 11 years the game has been available. In 2015, FFXIV had about 4 million registered players. The number reached 10 million, after the launch of the second expansion, launched in 2017, entitled Stormblood. Since then, the popularity of the game has continued to grow exponentially until reaching, in 2021, the mark of 24 million players registered around the world.
Naoki Yoshida is widely credited with the success of the game that had a catastrophic release. After taking over the direction of the MMORPG, the director gradually managed to transform the public’s opinion about the game. “You know how problematic things were for us with the original Final Fantasy 14. Since then, we’ve been able to turn the title into one that makes a huge contribution to our company’s profits,” commented Yoshida.
Unlike other MMOs FFXIV should continue to grow
The Endwalker expansion, which arrives on November 23rd for PC, PS4 and PS5, is highly anticipated as it will end the current story arc within the MMO universe. Yoshida comments that he intends to stay ahead of the game to ensure the game’s continued success in upcoming events.

For an MMO is highly unusual that its popularity continues to grow 11 years after release.. Even more unusual is that its popularity peaks after a catastrophic release. While it is expected that player interest will diminish over the years, like what happened with Dota 2 and also with what we can see with Blizzard games, Final Fantasy XIV should continue to rise for some time.
Importantly, Naoki Yoshida is also behind the new numbered title in the series: Final Fantasy XVI, for this reason, fans of the franchise have a good expectation before the launch of the new game.
