Ferrari, Binotto: “No significant development on the SF21, all efforts on 2022”

Ferrari is practically one step away from taking third place in the Constructors’ World Championship, relying on a 39.5-point advantage over McLaren two races to go. In 2021 the SF21 significantly improved compared to the derelict SF1000, as can be seen from the performances and results achieved on the track.

In this regard, Mattia Binotto admitted that the team has practically not destined any important development in view of 2021, but has diverted all efforts to next year where there will be the introduction of the new regulation that will bring completely different cars compared to the current ones. A chance that the Cavallino wants to make the most of in order to be competitive again at high levels.

We have never significantly developed the current car – said Binotto, quoted by Autosport – We introduced a couple of developments at the start of the season and that’s it. Except for the power unit afterwards, again this was a development ahead of 2022, so all our efforts since the start of the season have always been on the 2022 car. We never thought about penalizing 2022 to advantage of 2021”.

Binotto then, discussing the goals set for the current season, said: “We knew we could fight for third place early this season, we knew it could be very close but we knew our main goal in 2021 wasn’t third place, but to try to improve in all the details as a team and the third place was simply a result. I think if we are reaching third place today it is because the team, the way we are working on the various weekends has certainly improved a lot since the beginning of the season and not because the car itself has developed.”.

The TP of Maranello also made a comparison with the technical-sporting situation seen in 2020: “If I look at where we were last year, sixth, with few points in the championship, I think we made the most of our possibilities with the current regulations and most of the car also had very limited development opportunities. Overall I think the team has made great progress with what was possible and for that I am so happy because yes, third position is a great result of efforts.”.
