WizKid’s “Essence” with Tems and Justin Bieber reached the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 and subsequently made history
Easily one of the biggest hits of the American summer is “Essence”. The song sung by WizKid featuring Tems, another singer who is famous wherever she goes, surprised all her fans, becoming the most listened to single in recent months. The original version of the track, released on October 30, 2020, gained a second version in 2021 and, at the time of publication, the music video for the song has garnered over 36 million views on the YouTube.
Shortly after Justin Bieber was added to the second version of “Essence” in August, the hit single from WizKid and Tems finally reached the top of the Billboard Hot 100, as it currently ranks tenth. According to Baller Alert, this news isn’t just a moment of celebration for Tems and WizKid who have now secured their first top 10 as a solo artist and second hit since their big milestone with Drake in 2016 with the song, “One Dance” , but for Nigerian music as a whole.
“Essence” is reportedly the first Nigerian song in history to reach the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100. While many WizKid and Tems fans are enthusiastic about the artists, many of them expressed disappointment at the Justin Bieber-featured remix.
“That song didn’t need another version, let alone another artist,” wrote one user in response to Baller Alert’s report. “Bravo,” wrote another user, congratulating Tems and WizKid before criticizing Justin Bieber’s involvement. “I prefer the original version, I didn’t like the new version with Bieber”.
“This is the first time a song has been competing at the level of a single similarly promoted by Western pop artists. And I hope it’s the lasting influence of the sound – that it opens doors for more people with different styles and textures.”, said the artist shortly after releasing the remix with Justin Bieber.
It was already clear that WizKid had enough confidence to hit that big career milestone again.
