Streaming platforms, cafes, hypermarkets… The subscription model is available in all spheres, and is now taking hold in sports equipment. Decathlon has been testing a new concept in Belgium for four months: for 20 to 80 euros per month, the brand’s customers can use the products it offers, without having to buy them. BFM TV gave the details of the various subscriptions on June 20: 20 euros per month for a ceiling of 400 euros in equipment, 40 euros for a ceiling of 1,000 euros, then 80 euros for a ceiling of 2,000 euros.

Luc Teerlinck, innovation and business model transformation manager at Decathlon, had already given a foretaste of this service during an event organized by small web, last February. “We approached families with children because they regularly want to discover and practice new sports. They also grow and they have to change equipment. And families practice activities together from time to time, where everyone must have their own equipment, ”explained.
Electric bikes, paddles, trekking tents…
After a few months, where is the experiment? “Electric bikes or paddleboards are quite popular products at the moment because they meet seasonal demand. Bulky products and/or products that are used for a particular occasion, such as trekking or family tents, also work because customers do not have to store them or clean them after use,” the sports equipment manufacturer told BFMTV.
If they do not have to ensure the maintenance of the equipment in depth – everything is reconditioned at Decathlon before each provision, and this allows Decathlon to test the durability of their products –, they must still return them in the same condition as when they got them back. The offer concerns the most popular sports, but will soon be extended. If it is experienced in countries other than Belgium – Decathlon has not given a list to our colleagues – we do not yet know if it will arrive in France.
