After Midsommar and Black WidowFlorence Pugh will play in the adaptation of one of the greatest classics of American literature for Netflix.
In just a few films, the young British actress has established herself as one of the Hollywood rising stars. Revealed in 2016 by interpreting a young nymphomaniac Lady Macbeth in The Young LadyFlorence Pugh achieved international recognition in the horrific Midsommar by Ari Aster.
Since then, the actress has multiplied the films and records. After achieving the significant feat of making Amy March sympathetic in the rehabilitation of Daughters of Doctor March by Greta Gerig, and embodied the explosive younger sister of Scarlett Johansson in Black WidowPugh has been announced to star in several highly anticipated projects, such as dune 2 by Denis Villeneuve Don’t Worry Darling by Olivia Wilde, or even Oppenheimer by Christopher Nolan.
And if this diary already seems very busy, this has obviously in no way prevented the actress from adding a small series to it in passing, which will tell the story ofone of the greatest classics of American literature: East of Eden.
Pugh is holding Hollywood hostage and no one is complaining
Adapted for the first time to the cinema with none other than James Dean as headliner, the novel by John Steinbeck (Nobel Prize for Literature in 1962), East of Eden, will therefore be the subject of a new adaptation in serial format intended for the Netflix catalog. The series will be written and produced by actress and screenwriter Zoe Kazan (Rebel Wedding, Her name is Ruby), the granddaughter of Elia Kazan, who had directed the original footage in 1955. As for Florence Pugh, she will play Cathy Ames, one of the main antagonists of story.
East of Eden is a free interpretation of the myth of Cain and Abel, taking place in the Salinas Valley, California. Deployed over an extended period between the Civil War until the end of the First World War, the novel explores different themes such as love, depravity, betrayal, duty, or the scars of past trauma.
The enterprise of such an adaptation to the small screen therefore promises to be titanic for Kazan, which nevertheless remains very enthusiastic.
Chilling and tailor-made for the role
Thus, in a press release relayed by Deadlinethe screenwriter and future producer said:
“I fell in love with East of Eden the first time I read it, when I was a teenager. Since then, adapting Steinbeck’s novel – its incredible story, its three generations, in its entirety – has always been my dream. More than anything, I want to give pride of place to the character of Cathy Ames, who is a brilliant and singular antagonist. Florence Pugh is my dream Cathy. I cannot imagine a more striking actress to bring it to life.”
Where Elia Kazan’s footage only retraced part of the original story, the Netflix mini-series should therefore probe the horrors of each of the generations of the Trask and Hamilton families. For now, no other information was provided, but the project should continue its casting operation. Until then, the viewer will be able to find Florence Pugh in the horror thriller Don’t Worry Darling alongside Harry Styles, in theaters September 28.
