Ribeiro finds it bizarre that fans expect him to dance on command
Alfonso Ribeiro currently hosts America’s Funniest Home Videos on American TV, and with the show entering a new season, he is promoting the show. Of course, Ribeiro is mostly known for playing Carlton in the hit ’90s show Um Maluco No Pedaço. Carlton was the brains of the Banks family, and was often mocked for his musical tastes and dance moves.
His most famous dance move was “The Carlton”, which has already been imitated by hundreds of thousands of fans at this point. Unfortunately, some fans find that Ribeiro is constantly in character and love to pester him by asking him to do the dance whenever they see him in public. when talking to Jimmy Kimmel, Ribeiro noted that this type of request makes him very uncomfortable, especially as a black man.
“I’m a black guy, I just won’t be dancing for you. That’s not going to happen,” Carlton said. “What makes you think you’re going to ask a random person to dance for you, and they’re going to say, ‘Oh my God, I’ve been waiting for you to ask! Wait a second, let me get into character.’ It’s not that – I don’t understand. Will not happen.”
Kimmel eventually agreed with Ribeiro, noting that it’s beyond weird that fans feel so empowered. Of course, both men have a point here, as fan behavior can be pretty bizarre. I hope that, moving forward, the fans get the message and finally leave Ribeiro alone.
