The HBO Max platform gave the green light, this Thursday, January 13, for a reboot of the famous series “Degrassi”. Filming should begin this summer in Toronto for broadcast in the course of 2023. The series should have ten one-hour episodes. Produced by Canadian company ‘WildBrain’, it will be developed by creators Lara Azzopardi and Julia Cohen: “Perhaps what excites us the most about taking on this series is to make it a real series dramatic (…) We are honored to have the opportunity to bring this iconic series back to homes, ”said the showrunners.
The revival of “Degrassi” is described by the press release as: “A character-driven series that deals with the high school experience and the thrilling and often painful journey of self-discovery.” While the reboot is set to explore, according to HBO Max’s plot description, “a group of teenagers and teachers living in the shadows of events that bind and tear them apart. The series sinks into the hearts and homes of diverse and complicated characters, who struggle to find their new normal, in search of hope, redemption and love.”
Additionally, the platform has acquired U.S. streaming rights to all 14 seasons of “Degrassi: The Next Generation,” which will premiere in spring 2022.
An ever-popular series
“Degrassi” already has several series to its credit. Indeed, the first “Degrassi Street Children” was broadcast from 1979 to 1986. Four versions followed: “Degrassi Junior High” (1987-1989); “Degrassi High” (1989-1991); “Degrassi: the new generation” (2001-2015) and finally “Degrassi: the new class” (2016-2017)
This very popular series has touched its audience year after year by depicting the adventures, joys and misfortunes of teenagers from Degrassi high school. She also kick-started several careers, such as that of rapper Drake. He played for several seasons the character of Jimmy Brookes, a disabled basketball player, in “Degrassi: the new generation”.
