Cuban Government publishes Bill of the Family Code

The Cuban government published in the Official Gazette the Bill of the new Family Code, which was approved last December by Parliament.

The text, whose main novelties are the approval of same-sex marriage and the elimination of child marriage, will be submitted to popular consultation between the 1st. February and April 30 of this year.

The document can be viewed at Official Gazette No. 4 Extraordinary of 2022, of January 12 of this year.

The governor Miguel Diaz-Canel announced the publication of the project on his Twitter account, and invited us to study its content and “join this song for the rights of all”, as if all Cuban citizens could vote in the referendum, which is not true, since that residents abroad will not be able to do so.

Díaz-Canel has said that the new law is “tempered to these times”, and that it reflects “the different problems that are manifested in the daily life of our lives”.

The version of the text that was approved in the legislative body is number 22, after an analysis process that involved specialists, research centers, academies, public institutions and social organizations in the country.

Despite the importance for the country of approving same-sex marriage and denying child marriage under any circumstances, Cubans residing abroad will not be able to participate in the referendum popular.

Only Island collaborators and personnel who are abroad for official reasons may participate, which includes diplomats, medical brigades, engineers and any other personnel or official who is carrying out a State mission.

The decision excludes nationals who are traveling for personal reasons and those who reside voluntarily in other countries, even if they maintain residence on the Island.
