And officially started! The first edition of the Junior Pan American Games, held in Cali, Colombia, had its opening ceremony on Thursday night (25). Valuing the country’s pillars and roots, the event was marked by many races, music and movements. The Brazilian delegation, as in the Tokyo Olympic Games, sent only four representatives, the flag bearers Pâmela Rosa and Breno Correia, Marco La Porta and Moema Ramos.

During the ceremony, the organization of the Junior Pan American Games in Cali sought to show the country’s origins and value colors, rhythms and shapes. In this way, music and dance, of the most varied styles, were present at almost every moment. To mark the transition to the new generation, the organization brought in great names in Colombian sport, who participated in the 1971 Pan American Games, also in the Colombian city.

In his first speech at the ceremony, Neven Ilic, president of Panam Sports, highlighted the holding of the Junior Pan American Games in Cali as the continent is passing by and valued the presence of young people in sport. “You are the future of sport on the continent”, said the president.

Entering the sound of “Ai se eu tepego” by Michel Teló, the Brazilian quartet was one of the first to enter the opening ceremony, which respected alphabetical order. Despite having few people, by choice of the country, the entry of Brazilians was one of the ones that most excited the audience.

“It was a unique feeling, I always had this dream of being a flag bearer of Brazil. It was difficult to sleep last night, and before entering the stadium too. But it made me even more excited to compete from this Friday onwards”, said Breno Correia, who competed in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games and has five medals on his CV at the Pan de Lima 2019.

“It was a very good experience. It is very gratifying to carry our flag and represent thousands of athletes. I would like to thank everyone at COB, who gave us this opportunity”, said Pâmela Rosa, who this Friday, 26, will compete in her first competition since winning her second world title, two weeks ago, in Jacksonville (USA).

Brazil’s delegation in Cali

Brazil arrives for the Junior Pan American Games in Cali with the third largest delegation, among all countries, with 358 athletes from 38 sports. Of these athletes, 12 were at the Tokyo Olympics, as is the case with Pamela Rosa, and five were on the podium at the Pan American Games in Lima, in 2019, as is the case with Breno Correia, from swimming, who was medalist in Peru on five occasions.
