Bleachers replace Roddy Ricch as SNL musical guest after COVID exposure

Indie pop group Bleachers are set to replace rapper Roddy Ricch as musical guest on Saturday Night Live (SNL) this Saturday after the rapper had to drop out due to exposure to COVID. Ricch was scheduled to appear alongside host Ariana Debose.

“Due to the recent exposure of Covid in my team and to ensure the safety of everyone, I will not be able to play on SNL This weekend. I work with the SNL team to lock in a new date though, ”Ricch wrote on Instagram.

Bleachers, starring Jack Antonoff, has worked with other major artists including Taylor Swift, Lorde, and Bruce Springsteen. The group is releasing their third studio album, Eliminate the sadness of Saturday night, an appropriate title because that’s generally what SNL tries to do. In 2012, he was a member of the rock duo Fun, whose album Some nights became a huge success.

Roddy Ricch’s dropout is just another way COVID-19 is having an impact SNL

Ricch’s COVID issues are just the latest to have an impact SNL. On December 18, the episode normally booked as a Christmas special, was essentially canceled due to the spread of COVID-19, particularly in New York City where the series is set. The episode was to be hosted by Paul Rudd, who joined the quintuples club, with musical guest Charli XCX. Rudd ended up hosting anyway, but the episode had no audiences and only released digital shorts. The only cast members who appeared were Michael Che and Kenan Thompson, with special appearances from Tina Fey and Tom Hanks.

However, the episode still had a few highlights, including a hilarious digital sketch where Kate McKinnon and Aidy Bryant played a pair of middle-aged mothers in a Homegoods commercial where they begged grandchildren for Christmas. SNL has been experimenting with ways to present the show since the onset of COVID. At the start of the pandemic, many skits were filmed from the actors’ homes as they found creative ways to make the skits work.

Ricch is now the third musical guest to drop out SNL due to COVID-19 issues and that includes singer Morgan Wallen who postponed his appearance to 2020 after breaking COVID protocols. Other late-night TV shows have COVID-19 issues as well as Seth Meyers and James Corden have canceled studio shows because they both tested positive.

Debose always does it SNL debut this weekend. Debose recently appeared in Steven Spielberg West Side Story and next to SNLCecily Strong dans Apple TV+ Schmigadon.

SNL will air its 2022 first episode on January 15 on NBC and Peacock at 11:30 p.m. ET / 8:30 p.m. PT.
