At least 48 people remain trapped underground after mine accident in Siberia

A total of 48 people are still in a mine in the Russian province of Kemerovo, in Siberia, where smoke detectors were activated on Thursday, the Sputnik agency was told by the Russian Emergency Ministry.

“In total, 237 people surfaced, and another 48 remain at the mine,” the statement said.

According to the updated balance, the incident left one dead and 44 intoxicated, two of them in critical condition.

The Russian Investigation Committee opened a criminal case under part 2 of article 217 of the Russian Criminal Code which applies in cases of violation of industrial safety requirements for dangerous production facilities, resulting in the death of a negligent person.

The incident occurred this Thursday around 08:30 local time (01:30 GMT) at the Listvyazhnaya mine, in the town of Belovo. According to the available data, 285 people were found in the mine.
