Alonso: “Schumacher was the biggest rival in my career”

In the interview granted to the official Formula 1 podcast, Beyond The Grid, Fernando Alonso, among the many topics touched, also addressed the one relating to the rivalry with Michael Schumacher. The Spaniard admitted how the challenge with the seven-time world champion held in 2006, which saw Nando win the second (and to date last) world title in his career, was very important for him as the German took him to a level very high of competition. A detail that for Alonso leaves no room for doubt: Schumacher was his biggest rival.

Without a doubt he managed to bring out the best in me, Michael has been the biggest rival in my entire career – said Alonso – He was like a teacher to me, I was young at the time. Michael had wisdom and never gave up. He was a pilot who always did something special. In some races, Renault was superior, everything was fine in qualifying, they said you were on pole, but then when you got to the Parc Ferme you saw that Michael was second. You wondered how that was possible. His performance was incredible, he worked magic. The 2006 title value is incredible”.
